PUEBLO, Colo. – Freshman Jaylen Rodgers in the 800-meter and the men's 4x400-meter relay advanced to the final of the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Pueblo, Colo.
“It was an up and down day overall,” head coach James Reid. “We missed some opportunities to score some points and it wasn't because we didn't get after it, we just missed some chances. One of the things we try to tell the kids is we don't want to just make it here we want to be on the award stand. We are disappointed about not getting on the stand but we have had some
Freshman Jaylen Rodgers didn't let the pressure of being at the NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships affect her. Rodgers, a four-time state champion in the 800-meter in high school, ran a personal-best time of 2:09.97 to qualify for the final. She now owns the third and fourth fastest times in Angelo State history.
“To accomplish what Jaylen has done is pretty impressive as a freshman,” Reid said. Her first time to qualify for nationals and to run against this competition is outstanding. She ran a good race and stuck to the plan. Getting a personal best is just extra. I didn't think we had to do anything different to this point to get through to finals. I think she has put herself in good position for tomorrow.
The men's 4x400-meter relay used a 3:10.89 to advance to the final event of the NCAA Division II Championships for the fifth-straight year. Isidro Garcia, Dallas Gray, Robbie Thayer and Jeffrey Jones qualified with the seventh-fastest mark.
Keshawna Fisher, Theresa Sue, Lexi Brooks and Rodgers ran the preliminaries of the women's 4x400-meter relay in a time of 3:47.21. It was the 11th fastest time but the group did not advance to the final.
The duo of Keaton Hatch and Sean Reagan didn't finish their first NCAA Division II Championships the way they wanted. Reagan finished with a best throw of 158'-6” (48.31m) to place 14th overall while Hatch finished in 16th with a mark of 154'-5” (47.08m). Both were competing in their first NCAA Division II Championships.
Jayda Spencer was only able to get one throw in during the preliminaries of the women's discus. The senior threw 132'-1” (40.26m) and finished in 18th overall.
In the women's pole vault Kelsey Coffman was able to clear 11'-9.75” (3.60m) and place tied for 10th in her final event as a Rambelle. Junior Summer Sutherland was unable to clear a height.
Senior Cathryn Rittenberry concluded a busy two days by competing the women's heptathlon and the women's 100m hurdle preliminaries. She finished the heptathlon with a score of 4,568 points and a 14th place finish. The Carthage native in her final event as a Rambelle ran a 14.12 in the 100m hurdles but was unable to qualify for the final.
The Ramebelles are currently tied for 29th with two points. Competition begins tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. with the men's pole vault.
