SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State track & field teams set a strong early tone after the first day of the Lone Star Conference Championships held in Commerce, Texas, as Cathryn Rittenberry and Seth Pearson lead the heptathlon and decathlon, respectively.
“It was a great start,” head track & field coach James Reid said. “I don't think we could have scripted it any better. Seth is lighting it up in the decathlon and Shane and Donald are in good position going into the second day. Cathryn, Jordan and Monica are doing extremely well in the heptathlon. We did what we needed to do. Now we have to re-focus and prepare for tomorrow.”
Pearson set three new Lone Star Conference Championship records in the men's decathlon. His first LSC record came in the 100-meter as he clocked 10.94. The freshman's second record was in the long jump with a mark of 23'-0” (7.01m). Pearson used his hot start to score 3,776 points which is the third LSC Championship record of the day.
Pearson leads the men's decathlon and teammates Shane Holmes and Donald Macarthy are in the hunt in fourth and sixth place, respectively. Holmes scored 3,342 and Macarthy scored 3,269.
Record breaking seemed to be the theme of the day for the Rams and Rambelles. Rittenberry, who leads the women's heptathlon, broke the LSC Championships record in the 100-meter hurdles. The senior ran a personal best and NCAA Division II provisional mark of 13.98.
The LSC All-Academic Athlete of the Year added set new personal records in all four events on the day. She cleared 5'-1” (1.55m) in the high jump and threw the shot put 34'-9” (10.59m). Rittenberry finished the day up with a 25.71 in the 200-meter. She leads the heptathlon with a score of 3,050 points.
Jordan Gray set a good pace with a score of 2,960 points in the heptathlon. She ran a 14.48 in the hurdles and a 25.31 in the 200-meters. The freshman is in fourth place as she was aided by a throw of 36'-11” (11.25m) and a clearance of 4'-9.50” (1.46m).
Monica McCafferty is in seventh place after scoring 2,658 points in the heptathlon. Her biggest points came from the high jump as she cleared 5'-5.75” (1.67m) for 818 points.
Macarthy ran 11.63 in the 100-meters and clocked a 51.04 in the 400-meters. He threw 34'-1.50” (10.40m) and hit a mark of 20'-7.25” (6.28m) in the long jump.
Holmes got big points in the 100-meter (795), long jump (723) and the 400-meter (722). He ran times of 11.30 in the 100-meters and 52.07 in the 400-meters. His long jump mark measured 22'-8” (6.61m).
Day two of the LSC Outdoor Championships begin tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. with the heptathlon and decathlon.
