SAN ANGELO, Texas – Angelo State's Cathryn Rittenberry and Chrystal Ruiz were named to the 2012 Capital One Academic Track & Field All-District First Team announced Thursday.
“I think it is a great honor for both ladies,” head coach James Reid said. “They are definitely the epitome of what a student-athlete is supposed to be and what the NCAA what like to define as a student-athlete. They both are not only successful in their athletic endeavors but to be disciplined enough to excel in the classroom. Anytime our kids do well whether it is in the classroom or on the track I think it is a great reflection on Angelo State University.”
Rittenberry, the two-time Lone Star Conference Academic Female of the Year, has maintained a 4.0 grade-point average throughout her career. She qualified for her first NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 100-meter hurdles and the heptathlon. The Carthage native was named to the LSC All-Conference team for scoring 17 points.
Ruiz earned her seventh All-American honor of her career at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships. She finished third in the pentathlon with a personal-best score of 4,008 points. She competed in the 400-meters and high jump at the national meet as well. Ruiz has a 3.40 grade-point average as a graduate student.
Both Rittenberry and Ruiz are now eligible to become Capital One Academic All-American team with selections being made by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
