SAN ANGELO, Texas – Angelo State head football coach Will Wagner has announced changes to his coaching staff and has added Jay Eilers and Gary Salgado to his staff while naming Theron Aych as offensive coordinator.
Aych takes over offensive coordinator duties from Russell Gaskamp who left to take the helm at Oklahoma Panhandle State University. Aych is the assistant head coach and worked with the quarterbacks and wide receivers last season. Eilers will take over offensive line responsibilities and Salgado will coach defensive ends and be the special teams coordinator.
Eilers has 13 years of coaching experience both collegiately and in high school. He was the offensive line coach at Missouri Western State from 2006-2009 before being named head coach at Marshall High School in Marshall, Mo. He has coached one All-American, Roger Allan, and has mentored 12 student-athletes to all-conference selections during his career.
“Jay knows what it takes to be a champion,” Wagner said. “He was a part of the greatest turnaround at Northwest Missouri State University. He experienced going 0-11 to winning a national championship during his playing time there. He will bring an attitude and work ethic that will help us in reaching our goal of a LSC Championship. We are ecstatic to welcome Jay and his family to the Ram Family.”
As a four-year letter winner at Northwest Missouri State, he helped pave the way to the 1998 NCAA Division II Championship with a 15-0 record. While at Northwest Missouri State, Eilers was named honorable mention All-American and second team all-conference.
Salgado has been a graduate assistant at ASU where he coached both the defensive line and linebackers. He played collegiately at Fullerton Community College from 1999-2001 and at West Virginia Tech University in 2001 and 2002.
“I'm excited that we were able to keep Gary on staff,” Wagner said. “His attention to detail and intensity on the field makes him a great addition to our staff.”
The Garden Grove, Calif., native started his coaching career at Fullerton Community College. During his four years, the Hornets won a Mission Conference Championship in 2003 and the 2004 Golden Empire Bowl. His other coaching stops include the University of Wyoming and Eastern New Mexico.
