Continued Success: ASU Pitcher Thriving This Summer in Canada

Michael Lange

Michael Lange's dominance on the mound hasn't been affected by crossing the border.

Lange went 9-1 last season for the Angelo State baseball team, earning ABCA/Rawlings All-South Central and Lone Star Conference first team honors. Now he is spending the summer in Canada, pitching for the Lethbridge Bulls of the Western Major Baseball League. Lange is 5-2 for the Bulls in eight appearances this summer. He has struck out 23 and walked only 11 in 47.1 innings of work for Lethbridge which possesses a 23-18 record.

ASU teammate Austin Church is also pitching for the Bulls and has made 10 appearances with two starts. Church (1-1) has struck out 31 in 23.1 innings with only eight walks. Both Church and Lange will return to Angelo State next month as seniors looking to lead the Rams back to a LSC championship.

AngeloSports.com corresponded with Lange to discuss his experience this summer in Canada and his excitement about the 2013 ASU baseball team.

AngeloSports: What has it been like playing for the Lethbridge Bulls this summer?
Lange: It's been wonderful playing in Lethbridge for the Bulls. Pitching this summer gave me a chance to develop my changeup into my fourth pitch. Most of all, I feel that it was a good decision to stay playing ball over the summer and keeping my arm and body in shape. The competition level in the WMBL is good, there are D1 competitors playing as well as older player with much more experience. The best experience of this summer would be all the people I have met while up here. The boys and coaches are unreal, it been a pleasure playing with them all summer.

AngeloSports: What about baseball pushes you to continue working hard all year long?
Lange: Overall on improvement for next year, I need to build more strength and endurance to stay healthy and perform at my best. I can't really put a finger on what makes me work hard for baseball all year. I guess it would be to prove to everyone, including myself, that I can play and succeed in this sport.

AngeloSports: Have you played in the field at all this summer, or have you completely made the move to pitcher?
Lange: I haven't been playing the field too much. I played a couple innings at short stop and 2nd and got at-bat. Pitching is obviously my strong point on the field, but I'm still taking ground balls and batting practice every day in case I need to fill in at some point.

AngeloSports: What mentality are you trying to approach this summer with?
Lange: My mentality for this summer is to sharpen my skills as a player and prepare myself as much as possible for the 2013 season.

AngeloSports: What are you looking forward to next year with all the talent coming back to the ASU baseball team?
Lange: What I'm really looking forward to for next year is seeing if the boys and I can bring it home for ASU. Making it to regionals was cool and all, but our goal wasn't to make it to regionals, it was to win the World Series.

AngeloSports: Is this your first time out of the country/or at least playing out of the country? What's it like having Austin Church up there with you?
Lange: This wasn't my first time out of the country, but it was the first time playing out of the country. Having Church up here with me is wonderful. We get to joke about things that happened back in the states and stuff like that. We throw with each other every day and it's also nice having him as a relief pitcher too.
