Bobo Surges, Rambelles Improve Six Strokes in Final Round

Abby Bobo
AMARILLO – The Angelo State golf team cut six shots off its opening round and finished in seventh place at the WTAMU Lady Buff Stampede after firing a 318 team total on Tuesday in the final round at Tascosa Country Club.

Abby Bobo made the biggest improvement of the tournament, slicing her round by five strokes from the first round to the second round to lead the Rambelles with a 157 two-day total. Bobo's final round of 76 (+4) positioned herself in a tie for 15th in the individual standings.

“I did a lot better with my approach shots today and was able to judge the wind better,” Bobo said. “I was hitting more greens and making some putts. I wasn't happy with yesterday so it feels good to finish with a better round. It helps with confidence for the next tournament.”

Courtney Rutledge equaled her first-round 79 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 18th with a two-round score of 158. Maury McCormick (82, 81), placed 34th, Ashley Bartholomew (82, 84) took 43rd and Krista Czarnecki (85, 82) finished in a tie for 46th. ASU finished with a two-round total of 642 (324, 318; +66) in its first tournament of the fall season.

“I'm walking away knowing that I have a lot to improve on,” Rutledge said. “My ball striking was good but my short game was very inconsistent. That's where my improvement has to be."

Lubbock Christian won the tournament with a team total of 619 (204, 315) with Midwestern State taking second with rounds of 309 and 314 (623). Cameron University took fourth with a 631 (320, 311) to finish nine shots ahead of the Rambelles. Angelo State finished ahead of West Texas A&M (322, 325 -647) and Texas A&M-Commerce (320, 331 – 651). LCU's Anna Schopp won the tournament after shooting 1-under par in the final round to finish with two-day total of 144 (even par). Kendra Whittley (Midwestern State) took second at 5-over.

“The wind played a really big factor for everyone, including putts,” Rutledge said. “From the practice round where it wasn't windy to today was a big adjustment. It made a difference and everyone had to be ready for it.”

The Rambelles return to action on Monday, Sept. 17 for the first day of the Concho River Classic which will be held at Bentwood Country Club.

“I'm very excited to be playing on our home course,” Rutledge said. “It's a good feeling that you know you've been everywhere on that course and what to do in those positions.”

Coach Kathleen Price's Comments
“Our ball striking was great and we were able to do some things very well. There were some lip outs and shots that were mishit, but overall I'm really happy with the way they played. They were patient out there and they know they can play. We have some experience and knew that if we stayed focused that we could have a better round today than we did yesterday. Each person knows that they could have cut some strokes off their round today and are ready to keep improving.”
