Bobo Shoots a Career-Best 71 at First Round of Concho River Classic

Bobo

SAN ANGELO – Abby Bobo fired a career-best 71 on the first day of the Concho River Classic to go into the final round in second place at the par-72 Bentwood Country Club.

Bobo, a sophomore from Wichita Falls, had a previous best of 77 that she shot at last year's Lone Star Conference tournament and said that her best practice round at Bentwood had been a 73.  Bobo birdied five holes on the day, including closing out her round with birdies on 16 and 18.

“I just hit so many greens and was striking the ball really solid,” said Bobo, who shot a 36 on the front nine and a 35 on the back. “I wanted to come out and perform well for everyone and show them that we are good. I think we did that.”

Bobo trails only Flower Castillo of Incarnate Word who leads the tournament at 2-under. St. Edward's is the clubhouse leading team after shooting a 297, while Midwestern State (300), Newman (303) and Tarleton State (304) are in position to make a charge on Tuesday.

The Rambelles are in fifth place after the first round after shooting a 309 team total. Courtney Rutledge and Maury McCormick both shot rounds of 79, while Ashley Bartholomew carded an 80 and Krista Czarnecki an 87. Bartholomew shot 1-over on the front nine while Czarnecki rebounded from a rough front nine to shoot a 39 on the back nine.

Playing as individuals at the tournament, ASU's Liz Chavarria shot a 78 in her first collegiate tournament, while Taylor Griffin finished with an 85 and Jordan Jernigan an 89.

The Concho River Classic resumes at 8 a.m. on Tuesday for the final round.

"I didn't do what I wanted to, but it was a great day for golf and there were some low scores out there,” Rutledge said. “We always look to improve on the second day. Hopefully we can knock in some more putts.”
