SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State men's basketball team made 12 3-pointers and snapped a six-game losing streak with a 102-77 non-conference win over Northwood University on Saturday at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.

The Rams (4-10) scored a season-high with their 102-point outing and the 12 3-pointers is second only to making 13 3-pointers against Arlington Baptist. The Rams improved to 3-1 in non-conference games at the Junell Center and to 4-3 overall at home. The win snaps a losing streak that went back to a 57-52 win over Tarleton State on Dec. 5.

“When you're on a losing streak, it seems like everything is hard,” ASU junior Chris Talkington said. “Getting this win was really important for our team. We just have to stay right mentally and keep working to get better.”

Bryan Hammond and Dakota Rawls each scored 22 points to lead the Rams, while Jovan Austin added 18 and Talkington contributed 16. Hammond had career highs in points, assists (8) and steals (5), while Rawls had his first double-double of the season by adding 10 rebounds to his 22-point effort. All 16 of Talkington's points came from 3-pointers, while Rawls added three 3-pointers and Austin had two.

“It's hard for teams to guard us when we are sinking shots like we were,” Talkington said. “They can't come down and guard us like they can when we are not shooting very well. It spreads out the game and allows us to get in the lane.”

Hammond also went 9 of 11 on free throws, while Austin made 8 of 11. The Rams only trailed twice in the game, but lead throughout after an Austin 3-pointer at the 16:50 mark of the first half.

The Rams, who led 47-36 at halftime, shot 46.8 percent from the field in the game, including 40 percent from beyond the arc. ASU also made 32 of 43 shots from the free-throw line and limited its turnovers to 15. The 102-point effort was the first time the Rams have scored over 100 since a 116-111 quadruple overtime loss to Eastern New Mexico in 2011 with the last 100-point win coming in a 128-104 victory over East Central in 2010.

Everrett Pleasant led Northwood (1-19) with 26 points, including having 19 points at halftime. The Knights, an NAIA school out of the Red River Athletic Conference, shot 39.7 percent from the floor in their first game ever at the Junell Center.

Angelo State returns to action and conference play at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday against Texas A&M-Kingsville in the Junell Center. The game will be the final of a four-game home stand.
