SAN ANGELO – Lauren Holt and Haylee Oliver each recorded double-doubles and the Angelo State women's basketball team rolled to a 65-51 Lone Star Conference win over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Wednesday at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.

The Belles (7-7, 4-4 LSC) snapped a three-game losing streak in the process and earned their head coach Sally Walling Brooks her 399th win of her coaching career. Brooks will go for her 400th victory on Saturday at Incarnate Word – the university she won 155 games in nine years at before coming to Angelo State.

For Brooks and the Belles, the most important objective was not career records but instead earning the victory on Wednesday against the Javelinas (2-11, 1-7 LSC).

“We needed to win tonight and play better than we have been,” said Brooks, whose team jumped out to a 16-2 lead to open the game. “We can play better but it was a good win for us. I was happy to see them come out and take control early and keep it up. We rebounded well tonight and were aggressive and that was good to see.”

Holt led Angelo State with 19 points and 14 rebounds, while Haylee Oliver had 12 points and 10 rebounds. It was Oliver's sixth double-double of the season and Holt's fourth. Leah LeMaire added eight points with freshmen Chesney Neely and Jennifer Lapp each scoring seven points. Holt, who led all scorers at halftime with 12 points after a buzzer-beating 3-pointer at the horn, was also a category leader with three blocks and three steals.

“I think we did a great job working as a team tonight,” said Lapp, who hit a jumper at the 9:25 mark of the season half to give the Belles their biggest advantage of the game at 23 points. “We've been working hard in practice and it was a mindset thing. We pressed through and got the job done. It is preparation and we came out focused and finished strong.”

The Belles, which out-rebounded A&M-Kingsville 65-51 in the game, never trailed in the game and took their biggest halftime lead of the season into the locker room at 34-17. ASU shot 48.3 percent from the field in the first half and finished the game at 46.4 percent, despite going 3 of 13 on 3-pointers.

Ashley Viera led the Javelinas with 15 points and three steals, while Madara Gulbe added eight points. A&M-Kingsville shot only 24.2 percent from the field, but were able to knock down nine 3-pointers in the contest.

Angelo State will take on Incarnate Word (9-5, 5-3 LSC) at 2 p.m. on Saturday. UIW will be coming off a 76-65 loss against Abilene Christian which it suffered on Tuesday in Abilene. The game will be carried on 1260AM KKSA with Jeremy Bryant on the call.
