SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State women's basketball team will look to improve on its 3-1 record on the road and try to give Sally Walling Brooks her 400
th career victory as it plays at Incarnate Word on Saturday at 2 p.m. in San Antonio.
The Belles moved to 7-7 and 4-4 in Lone Star Conference play after snapping a three-game losing streak with a 65-51 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville last night.
Lauren Holt and
Haylee Oliver both recorded double-doubles in the victory. Holt lead all players with 19 points and 14 rebounds.
The Belles team defense shined in the win. The 17 points the Belles held Texas A&M-Kingsville is the lowest of the season in the first half. Angelo State held TAMUK to 24-percent shooting which is below the Belles field goal percentage defense for the season of 36-percent. ASU held a 52-32 rebounding advantage over the Javelinas which is the highest margin of the season.
The win moved Walling Brooks to 399 for her career. She will have the opportunity to win No. 400 against the Incarnate Word, the only other school she has been a head coach. Over the last 13 years as coach of the Belles, Walling Brooks is 13-3 overall against Incarnate Word and 5-1 in San Antonio. She accumulated 155 wins while at Incarnate Word. Last night's victory was her 244
th while at Angelo State.
Holt is averaging 11.9 points this season and 9.2 rebounds. She stuffed three shots in the win and is the LSC leader in the category at 2.3 per game. Holt's 63 career blocks rank her No. 6 all time in Belle program history.
Oliver collected her sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Her 9.5 rebounding average is fourth overall in the league. She has helped herself at the free-throw line shooting 84-pecent (27-32) on the season.
Junior
Leah LeMaire is the third Belle to average double figures scoring. Her 11.5 average is up 4.4 points per game from last year.
Incarnate Word is 9-5 and 5-3 in conference play. The Cardinals have excelled at home going 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the LSC. UIW scored 62.4 points per game while holding opponents to a league leading 59.9 per game. The Cardinals are also the LSC's leader in steals at 11.3 per game and turnover margin at a positive 5.29. Ashlyn Green leads the Cardinals with 11.3 points per game.
Angelo State leads the overall series between the two schools with a 14-7 advantage. The Belles won in San Antonio last year but dropped its conference game at home to UIW. It will be the first road since playing in Lawton on January 2
