Belles vs. Abilene Christian Gallery
SAN ANGELO – Abilene Christian snapped a seven-game losing streak in San Angelo with a 53-39 Lone Star Conference win over Angelo State on Wednesday at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.
The Belles (7-9, 4-6 LSC) fall to 3-4 at home this season, while Abilene Christian (13-3, 8-2 LSC) has now won six straight games and nine of its last 10. The Belles and Wildcats will meet again at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday at ACU's Moody Coliseum.
Lauren Holt led the Belles with 10 points, six blocks and eight rebounds, while
Leah LeMaire had nine points and six rebounds in the loss.
Devon Wilde scored eight points and
Morgan Youngblood added six. ASU struggled shooting throughout the night and finished with a 23.5 shooting percentage, including going 0 for 13 on 3-pointers against the Wildcats.
The Wildcats, who lead the conference in scoring this season, struggled against the Belle defense throughout the night and were held to a season-low 53 points. ACU was limited to a 27.3 shooting percentage and had a 9:14 scoreless streak in the first half. The Wildcats closed the first half on a 6-2 run after the drought, a run that was capped by a Whitney West buzzer-beating 3-pointer that took the teams into halftime tied at 18.
Kelsey Smith led ACU with 10 points and added four rebounds, while Mackenzie Lankford and Renata Marquez each had nine points for the Wildcats. ACU made six 3-pointers in the game – three in each half – and pulled out a win despite shooting 20.7 percent in the first half.
ACU capitalized on Angelo State turnovers in the game, outscoring the Belles 15-4 on points off turnovers and also saw a 23-12 advantage on bench scoring. The Belles outscored the Wildcats 14-12 in the paint and had a 48-45 rebounding advantage.
Saturday's game in Abilene will mark the final Lone Star Conference regular-season meeting between Angelo State and Abilene Christian. The series dates back to the 1975-76 season with the Wildcats holding a 50-33 advantage in the all-time series. ASU head coach Sally Walling Brooks is now 16-9 all-time against ACU and will look to earn her 400th career win.
