SAN ANGELO – Morgan Youngblood scored a season-high 19 points to help lead the Angelo State women's basketball team to a 60-50 Lone Star Conference win over Cameron on Wednesday at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.
The Belles (10-12, 7-9 LSC) held a 20-5 advantage on second-chance points over the Aggies (4-18, 3-13 LSC) and avenge a 70-61 loss at the beginning of January in Lawton, Okla. ASU has won two straight games and improve to 6-5 at home this season.
“It was a very important game for us to win to continue our momentum and get a win over them since we lost at their place,” Youngblood said. “We have to win these games at home and carry that over to our road games.”
Youngblood, who was one point shy of her career high in points, recorded her first double-double of the season by adding 11 rebounds, while
Lauren Holt went for 16 points and 12 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the year.
Leah LeMaire added 16 points and five rebounds with
Karli Kellermeier contributing nine rebounds and four points. The Belles, which led 29-20 at halftime, outrebounded the Aggies 45-37 in the game, including a 20-12 advantage on the offensive boards.
Haylee Oliver led the Belles with three blocks and four steals. ASU finished the game shooting 36.5 percent from the floor, including going 1 of 17 on 3-pointers. The rebounding advantage overcame the shooting setbacks and keeps the Belles in the sixth spot in the LSC standings with four regular-season games remaining.
“We've always been a pretty good rebounding team,” Youngblood said. “We haven't been shooting that great so it's really important for us to grab the rebounds and get second-chance points. In order to put points on the board, we have to grab those rebounds on our misses and get a better look.”
Chelsea Stamp led Cameron with 16 points and three assists, while Jordan Kauk added nine points and Ali Brown another seven. CU turned the ball over 21 times compared to the Belles 13 turnovers and had its own shooting difficulties by shooting 34 percent from the floor.
The Aggies only lead of the game came after a Lacy Reinke basket gave them a 2-0 advantage, but the Belles went on an 8-0 run over the next three minutes and never relinquished the lead again. CU stayed within striking distance for most of the game due to solid shooting from beyond the arc at 37.5 percent (9 of 24), but never got closer than the 10-point deficit after a pair of Oliver free throws pushed ASU's lead to 58-47 with 1:05 remaining in the game.
Angelo State now goes on a three-game road trip, starting with a 4 p.m. game on Saturday at Midwestern State in Wichita Falls followed by games at Texas Woman's and Texas A&M-Kingsville. The Belles will finish the season with their final home game of the year against Incarnate Word on Saturday, March 2 in the Junell Center.
