ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Angelo State men's track & field team racked up six All-American honors on the final day of the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The Rams and Rambelles combined for nine All-American honors over the three day meet. Â ASU finished the men's team race with 12 points tied for 20
th place while the women scored eight points for 25
th. It is the 28
th-straight year the Rams have scored at the national meet while the Rambelles have scored in 31 of the last 32 meets.
Luis Perez started things for the Rams by earning his first individual All-American honor in the 400-meters. The sophomore clocked a 46.76 to place seventh. He is the fifth Ram to earn All-American honors in program history and the first since James Howell in 2010.
Wala Gime continued thing by picking up his first individual All-American honor. The junior from Papua New Guinea ran the 110-meter hurdles in a 14.20 to cross the line in fifth place. He becomes the first Ram to garner All-American honors since Ryan McWilliams in 2009.Â
The men's 4x400-meter relay ended the meet and the year with a bang. The relay of
Dallas Gray, Perez,
Robbie Thayer and Gime ran a season-best time of 3:08.78 to place third in the final race of the meet. It is the 21
st a Rams 4x400-meter relay has earned All-American honors. It marks the second All-American for Gray and Gime while Thayer and Perez now have three each.
The Rams and Rambelles had some near misses that would have increased the All-American count.
In the men's triple jump,
Olisa Obiefuna made the final in his first trip to the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The sophomore jumped a personal best of 50'-2.50" (15.30-meters) on his second attempt to make the final. Obiefuna needed a jump of 50'-4.75" (15.36-meters) or better to pass eighth place. He recorded a personal-best mark of 50'-4.50" (15.35-meters) on his final attempt and one centimeter short of All-American honors.
Asael Arad, who came into the meet ranked No. 19, finished in 10
th place after a throw of 202'-7" (61.76-meters). It was sophomore's second-best throw of the season.
Jordan Gray was close to adding her second All-American honor of the meet. The junior clocked a 13.88, the same time she ran in the preliminaries, but placed ninth in a very fast heat.
Jasmine Ambowode got out to a quick start in the final of the 400-meter hurdles. The sophomore tried to maintain her speed but finished in ninth with a time of 1:04.35.
