Belles Open Conference Play in Stephenville

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team will open Lone Star Conference play on Wednesday, Jan. 5 at 5:30 p.m. in Stephenville against Tarleton State.

The Belles are 7-3 on the season after a 107-66 win over McMurry last Thursday. ASU will be looking for their first win in Stephenville since 2006 and their fourth conference opening win in the last five years. Angelo State is 1-1 on the road this season.

"Every night we play a conference game it is going to be a tough game," ASU head women's basketball coach Kevin Baker said. "This is as balanced a league as I have seen in many years. Anybody can beat anybody on any given night. The balance have power has evened out and whoever plays well each night is going to be the victor. You have to be looking forward to a challenge like that."

ASU is No. 5 nationally and No. 1 in the LSC in scoring at 85.1 points per game. The points per game have been aided by grabbing 17.0 offense rebounds per game which is No. 11 in the nation and No. 1 in the LSC. The Belles have been efficient in shot selection sinking 45.1-percnet from the field. Ball movement has also been key as ASU is averaging 19.1 assists per game. The 19.1 per game is currently No. 7 in NCAA Division II and No. 1 in the LSC.

Tarleton State enters with a 6-6 overall record and 0-2 in the LSC. The Texanns have lost to Texas Woman's 72-62 and Cameron 83-71 to start conference play. TSU averages 67.5 points per game and allows 64.0. Bailey Wipff and Ikpeaku Iwobi lead Tarleton State with 13.3 and 10.5 points per game, respectively.

"Tarleton State has such a great atmosphere," Baker said. "You know you are going to get to play in a really fun environment. They are a very well coached team and very athletic. They can do a lot of things to hurt you. They have lost their last three and so they are going to be ready to go at home. The energy is going to be everything you expect it to be."

The Belles are led by the LSC's leading scorer Taylor Dorsey. The 19.3 points per game is No. 23 nationally. She scored a career high 36 against St. Mary's and has eight games in double figures. The Ft. Worth native currently has scored in double-digits in five straight games. The junior also leads the teams in assists (36) and steals (20) while also being second on the team with 5.2 rebounds per game.

Jasmine Prophet has five games this season in double figures and is averaging 10.6 points per game. She grabs 4.8 rebounds per game scored a season high 21 points versus UTPB. Her .518 shooting clip is third on the team among teammates that average over 10 minutes per game. The junior leads the team with 25 offensive rebounds on the season, 13 blocks and is one of eight players with at least 10 assists.

Brea Mitchell, the team's leading rebounder at 5.5 per game, is third on the team in scoring at 10.2 per game. She has five games in double figures including a season high 18. She is tied for second on the team with 25 assists and has made 15 steals.

Diamalises Rivers is coming off a career night with 25 points in the win over McMurry. It was the sernior third game in double figures this season. She is scoring 8.3 points per game off the bench and grabbing 4.5 rebounds. The Puerto Rican has dished out eight assists made six steals on the season.

KeAnna Kelly added her fourth game in double figures against McMurry with 10 points. She is tied for second on the team with 15 steals. The sophomore has 12 steals and averaged 8.2 points per game. She has hit 15 three pointers as well.

Christina Robinson is second on the team with 25 assists and 15 steals. The junior scored 7.8 points per game while adding her third double-digit scoring game of the season the last time out. She is the team's top 3-point shooter draining 58.8-percent from behind the arc.

Four Belles averaging at least 10 minutes per game off the bench that has provided depth for ASU. Lexi Murphy is third on the team with 11 three pointers on the season. She scored 5.8 points per game and grabs 3.0 rebounds per game. Natalie Quesnel has 10 assists on the season and scores 4.3 per game. Kiahna Thompson has made eight 3-pointers on the season grabbed 2.3 rebounds per game. The sophomore scores 5.1 points per game. The fourth Belle is Nekeita Bailey with 12 assists and 2.6 points per game.
