SAN ANGELO, Texas – For the second consecutive year, the Angelo State baseball team received the No. 3 seed for the South Central Regional baseball tournament and will face No. 4 seed West Texas A&M on Thursday, May 19 in Grand Junction, Colorado.
The 2016 Lone Star Conference champion Rams will enter the regional tournament with a record of 35-20. This will mark the sixth time that ASU will make the trip to the South Central Championship and are 12-8 all-time in the regional tournament. This will also mark the second consecutive year that ASU has traveled to Grand Junction for the tournament. In 2015, the Rams dropped its first game to Colorado State Pueblo and then rallied back winning four straight to advance to the NCAA DII College World Series in Cary, North Carolina.
The Rams first game against West Texas A&M will be a rematch of the Lone Star Conference Tournament final. After downing the Buffs, 5-1, in game six of the LSC Tournament to force a do-or-die final game seven, ASU fell to the Buffs 4-2. Angelo State is 6-3 against West Texas A&M this season. This will also be the first NCAA postseason meeting between the two teams.
Joining ASU and WTAMU in Colorado, will be No. 1 seed Colorado Mesa (41-11), No. 2 seed St. Edward's (40-10), No. 5 seed Texas A&M – Kingsville (32-17) and No. 6 seed Lubbock Christian (35-14). Thursday, May 19 will consist of a three game schedule with Colorado Mesa, the only RMAC team to make the tournament, facing Lubbock Christian out of the Heartland Conference. Then, the second Heartland team, St. Edward's will take on fellow LSC member Texas A&M – Kingsville, and finally ASU will face WTAMU.
