No. 2 Rams Fall to Chaps in Series Finale

LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 2 Angelo State baseball team dropped a high scoring contest to Lubbock Christian by a final score of 18-17 on Monday afternoon at Hays Field.

With the loss, the Rams suffer its first series loss of the 2025 season and fall to an 18-6 record on the season and conference play while the Chaps improve to 13-9, 12-8.

Similar to games one and three of the series, scoring happened early and often as both teams put up 17 runs combined in the game's first three innings.

In the first inning, a groundnut from Chase Pendley scored Ethan Flodstrom, who led off the game being hit by a pitch. The Chaps used a two-run homer and a two-run double to put up four runs in response. The Rams answered with one run in the ensuing inning courtesy of a solo homer from Tayten Tredaway.

The top of the third inning began with a couple of walks drawn by Justin Harris and Flodstrom before Jacob Guerrero homered over the left field wall. A couple batters later, Tredaway singled to center field and Blake Wilhoite doubled to right center field to conclude the six runs scored in the frame.

Lubbock Christian retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning as the Chaps first two batters also reached base via the walk which led to back-to-back home runs to give the home team a 9-8 lead.

Scoring resumed in the bottom of the fifth when the Chaps hit three straight home runs to lead off the inning. LCU tacked on one more with an RBI single in the sixth to expand the Rams' deficit to five runs.

A comeback began at the top of the seventh when Flodstrom singled to right field to lead off the inning before Brett Smajstrla hit a pinch-hit, two run home run to cut the deficit down to three. Next inning, the Rams were able to regain the lead as the bases were loaded for Flodstrom when he hit a grand slam to right center field to make the score 14-13.

Back and forth ensued over the next inning as the Chaps were able to capture the lead once again with back-to-back home runs before the Rams pieced together two hits and a bases loaded walk to take it right back.

In the bottom of the ninth, Lubbock Christian put together a couple of singles and a double to score two runs and bring the game to its final score as the Chaparrals walked off the Rams for the third consecutive game.

The Rams return home tomorrow, Mar. 11 when they will play a non-conference doubleheader against Wayland Baptist with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
