Beck Breaks Stolen Base Record as No. 6 Rams Power Past Dustdevils

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 6 Angelo State baseball team utilized four home runs to power a 20-3 victory over Texas A&M International on a cool Friday night at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium. With the win, the Rams surge to a 21-6 (19-6) record while dropping the Dustdevils to 11-20 (10-19).

Action picked up in the bottom of the first inning after Nick Wilson struck out three Dustdevils in the game's opening frame. Ethan Flodstrom led off with a walk and was quickly moved to second off a single. Chase Pendley followed with a two-RBI double to left field before Weston Valasek and Tayten Tredaway homered over the left center and right field walls respectively to push the score to 5-0. Later in the inning, four walks loaded the bases for Guerrero, who then proceeded to hit a grand slam over the left center field wall give the Rams a 10-run lead.

The Blue and Gold proceeded to bat around the lineup for the second time in the game to add four more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Beck led off with a single up the middle before he went on to steal second base for his 100th career stolen base to break the program record for stolen bases in a career.

After Blake Wilhoite drew a walk and successfully executed a double steal of second and third base with Beck, Flodstrom singled to center field to score both runners aboard. Lane Hutchinson followed with a single up the middle to score Flodstrom and Valasek, who reached after getting hit by a pitch.

The Dustdevils answered with back-to-back-to-back singles to score a run in the top of the 3rd off Rams reliever Jude Cook before Jaxon Weatherly got the run back with an RBI single through the left side who reached after drawing a one out walk.

Cook came on in relief of Wilson in the second inning and pitched 2.1 innings where he allowed an earned run off four hits and two walks and collected four strikeouts on the way to his second victory from the bump.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Rams loaded the bases and scored two more runs off a hit-by-pitch and a walk to make it a 17-2 ballgame after TAMIU scored a second run with a RBI single in the top of the fifth.

A couple innings later Beck and Wilhoite reached base with free passes before Brett Smajstrla hit a inside the park home run to right center field to make the it an even 20 runs scored for the Rams and bring the game to its final score as Jude Stephens collected a strikeout to end the ballgame.

The Rams and Dustdevils will continue the series with a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 22 with the first pitch from Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium scheduled for 4 p.m.
