CANYON – Shelby Wilt was named the Lone Star Conference's Libero of the Year and
Katie MacLeay earned LSC Academic Player of the Year to headline Angelo State's postseason conference honors which were announced on Wednesday at the LSC Volleyball Championship banquet.
Mallory Blauser also picked up a special award by being named the LSC Newcomer of the Year and was selected to the first team with Wilt, while sophomore setter
Alexa Johnson and freshman outside hitter
Abbie Lynn were second-team selections. The Belles were also represented by
Brianna Sotello,
Zoey Hanrahan and MacLeay who were each recognized with honorable mention selections. MacLeay, Wilt and
Cerbi Ritchey were named to the LSC All-Academic team.
"It says a lot about our program for our players to be recognized with these awards," ASU head coach
Chuck Waddington said. "They put in countless hours of hard work throughout the season and it shows. Not a single one of them care too much about the individual awards because they are all team players, but I am extremely proud of them for earning these awards. They are very well-deserved and our program is very happy for them."
MacLeay is the first Angelo State volleyball player to win the LSC Academic Player of the Year in program history. MacLeay enters the postseason with 327 digs and is averaging 3.44 digs per set this season. A junior from San Antonio who maintains a 4.0 GPA as a biology major, MacLeay has 1,109 digs in her three years at ASU and is a two-time all-academic selection.
"I don't think there's anyone around who is more deserving of an award like this than her," Waddington said. "She's a 4.0 student-athlete who is going to get into medical school early and she helps us win on the court. I'm so proud of her for achieving this. She wants to be known as a great student-athlete and she's been that for our program."
Wilt is the all-time digs leader in program history with 2,389 digs in her career and earned her second LSC Libero of the Year award. She was also the LSC Libero of the Year in 2012 and has earned all-LSC recognition the past three seasons. Wilt comes into this season's postseason with 527 digs for the Belles after playing the majority of the year from the libero position. She has recorded double-digit dig performances in 25 of 26 matches and has also provided 190 assists.
"Shelby has been our anchor for a while," Waddington said. "She is the heart and soul of our team and is a very talented player who makes every player around her better. She's been great from her freshman year, but she continued working hard to get better and it has really shown this season. That says a lot about her drive to be great in everything she does."
Blauser, a sophomore from Round Rock, is in her first season at ASU after transferring from the University of Cincinnati. She has recorded 17 double-digit kill performances this season and had a career-high with 29 kills against Newman in a non-conference match. Blauser has also provided 48 blocks this season with six matches with three or more blocks. She is the second Belle to earn LSC Newcomer of the Year, following Shelbi Goode's selection in 2012. Blauser leads ASU with 341 kills this season and is averaging 3.79 kills per set, while Lynn has 238 kills and is averaging 2.74 per set.
"Mallory has been a go-to player for us from the start of the year," Waddington said. "That's why we brought her in. She's doing a nice job for us and continues to work to get better."
Lynn, a freshman from Amarillo, has provided 12 double-digit kill performances this season with a career-high 18 kills coming against Midwestern State and Texas Woman's and has a .234 attacking percentage this season.
Johnson, who is a two-time LSC Setter of the Week this season, leads the Belles with 962 assists and has also provided 213 digs. A sophomore from Nebraska, Johnson transferred to ASU this season from Lamar University. She had a season-high 60 assists in a five-set loss to West Texas A&M two weeks ago and has also provided 58 kills from her setter position.
Sotello is coming off a career-high 24 kills last Friday in a five-set win over Tarleton State and has provided 182 kills this season. Sotello is averaging 3.25 kills per set and has also provided 189 digs this season. She has recorded double-digit kills in eight matches this season, including in six of the past seven matches.
Hanrahan, a sophomore from Pflugerville, is averaging 0.94 blocks per set and has recorded three or more blocks in 18 matches this season. She has also supplied 175 kills for the Belles and leads the team with a .261 attacking percentage.
